Summer Soundtrack: Let’s Groove Tonight

If the Marvel Cinematic Universe is to be believed and we’re living in a multiverse, I’m writing from a fucked up timeline. You know it’s bad out there, I know it’s bad out there. We just gotta do our best and try to move in ways that make it less bad.

That said, I’m trying to focus more on the things that bring me joy. Spreading love should not only be the Brooklyn way. More love. More love. More love. Maybe that’s how we make it to the other side of this current morass.

I know the “song of the summer” is one that some folks can’t get enough of, but I remain confused. The lyrics are literally accusing the subject of the song of being a predator – but this is what folks are partying to? Seeing people get extra live on the “… a minorrrrrr” line is particularly concerning and perplexing, but at this age I know there are things I’m not supposed to understand. Moving on!

There is a lot of other new music out or coming soon from artists I love! I would never tell anyone to tune out from current events, but sometimes ya gotta protect your peace and go headphones over humans.

Next, I’m an avowed Yacht Rock fan (channel 17 on SiriusXM), but now they have a Yacht Soul bonus channel and it’s like their programming was reading my inner thoughts.

Finally, I recently did a roadtrip to attend the Hampton Jazz Festival and was introduced to an amazing blues artist, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram. He and Boney James were my event highlights.

I like a lot of R&B, jazz and pop music, and you might not guess it about me, but at the start of the eight-hour drive home, I was partially fueled by my Trap/Get Live playlist and a Dunkin frozen caramel coffee. I contain multitudes.

From Hampton to Baltimore, it was “2 Phones”, Kevin Gates; “Gold Slugs”, DJ Khaled; “Vice Versa”, Pastor Troy; “679”, Fetty Wap and more. I hit the proverbial wall in the Sunday 95N traffic and then thought… whose bright idea was it to do a drive longer than four hours? Long gone are the days where I could willingly and excitedly jump in the car from Atlanta to NYC (18 hours) or Denver to NYC (three days!)

Vice Versa, Pastor Troy

What new music did I miss? What are you listening to this summer?

  1. I haven’t been purposely listening to anything particular. I’ve been coming across music my accident. Lately I’ve been trying to get back into my creative bag with my photography…mostly street photography and also reading. I’m currently finishing up one of Brene Brown’s books.
I feel you on the long distance driving though. No ma’am Pam. My long distance driving days ended my sophomore year in college. But I’m glad you had a great time in the Hamptons. I’ve always wanted to visit there.
